Between the fragile ages of fifteen to eighteen, my mother would tell me (in a reprimanding tone) “No one will like you if your face is like that!” and my father used to ask, teasingly, “Why are there so many pimples on your face?” as if I had control over my unpredictable breakouts.

It’s no surprise that many of us find ourselves demoralized when our skin is not as perfect as we want it to be, no matter what we do or how long we wait and hope and wish and pray that our hormones calm down and leave us in peace. Today we’re surrounded by constant reminders of what perfect skin looks like, whether it may be from adverts, TV, and even in real life by our peers who have matured gracefully into adulthood.

Your skin is more likely to balance out from your mid-twenties onwards when your hormones have stabilized. In fact, there are many things you can do to improve upon your imperfections little by little. You can eat healthier, sleep more, and use certain products designed to treat and calm your skin. What is important is to never lose hope and to remember that with patience, time, and effort, you will get better!

  • Your Insecurities are not Your Flaws

Though it may be difficult to love yourself on days where you don’t look your best, never confuse your insecurities for your flaws. Our insecurities are inward and personal, but our flaws are not. Indeed, our insecurities are not the things that make us less likeable or less attractive compared to others. They are what we think make us less perfect than others. Everyone has their share of insecurities, and we all should work towards overcoming them, appreciating our strengths and recognising our real flaws. For example, oily skin may be a source of insecurity, but being irresponsible and negligent are flaws. Someone is more likely to recognise and mark you for your flaws instead of your insecurities.

So remind yourself this the next time you feel your self-esteem running low! The only thing our insecurities and flaws have in common is that they are both aspects of ourselves that we should work on in order to better ourselves.

  • Passion and Effort Can’t Be Bought

Not everyone has the privilege to afford make-up to hide their acne scars or skincare treatments to reduce the spots and pimples on their face. But, when all this is said and done, the key things that will lead you to success can’t be bought with money. If you truly feel for something, and express this passion through the effort you put into your work, people will recognise you for the work you do and not for the way you look.

Do not forget this the next time you feel that you’re losing out because your skin is not as flawless as someone else’s. As much as we may not be able to control our skin’s condition, we can control the aspects of ourselves that are truly important.

Be optimistic and be confident in yourself. You are much more beautiful (or handsome) than you will ever fathom because of this very simple fact: you will never be able to look at yourself from the same third person perspective that those who treasure you can. And remember this:
