dermagold, homegrown, overseas exchange, exchange tips, skincare tips

Whether you are excited about going abroad to study in the near future or have already embarked on your own unique exchange experience, here are some skincare tips that may come in handy if you find your skin reacting to its long-term exposure to a fresh new environment!

  1. Bring enough of your personal skincare with you

If you are using a skincare line that works for your face and helps you tackle your skin troubles, be sure not to leave it behind when you go on exchange! It might seem easier to buy facial cleansing products at your destination, but there’s something daunting about sifting through rows of brands you have never used, let alone seen before!

Of course, if you’re the more adventurous type, and you have the budget, go for it! Do take note of what works best for your skin and how it reacts to products both old and new in a foreign environment.

  1. Consider adaptive skincare products

While it’s common to find products that can treat your skin woes specifically (e.g. acne, oily face, dry skin), one of the things that is hard to predict is how your skin will react to an environment when you’re on exchange. Unless the weather of your destination is similar to Singapore’s, you may have to change up your products to treat your skin better under a brand new place. To prevent the trouble, why not consider using skincare that can cleanse and nourish your skin, regardless of the environment? This is what Dermagold prides itself in because its range of products work effectively in both the tropical Southeast Asian climate and the cool, dry weather of European countries.

  1. Relax!

Given how hectic life can be in Singapore for people both young and old, exchange is a great time to unwind a bit and relax in a less stressful environment! Letting go of stress can clear up your skin, and finding time for yourself means that you can finally try out that brand of face masks you’ve been eyeing for quite awhile now. We’re all guilty of hoarding cosmetic or facial products that we’ve never started using, so now’s a good time to try them out! Pamper yourself, but also remember to make the best use of your time and the learning opportunities you receive as one of the privileged individuals who get a chance to experience exchange! (:

  1. Care for your skin after you’re back too!

After an exciting and fruitful period abroad, some people may find their skin breaking out when they’ve returned to their home country! This is because your skin needs time to adjust and get used to Singapore’s weather. Don’t be surprised if you experience oilier skin or are more sensitive to outbreaks when you’ve returned from exchange. It’s normal and nothing to worry over! Instead, do pay attention to what your skin needs and change up your skincare routine by incorporating stronger or milder products wherever necessary.

As we break into the last stretch of 2015, your schedule at work may be getting more and more packed, and your list of tasks may be piling up faster than you can clear them. We know that sleep is something that seems like a lofty desire during such busy times, but sleep should never be neglected. This is not simply because a clear face is usually a sign of a sufficient and healthy amount of sleep, but giving your body time to repair is also good for your health and daily attitude as a whole. Here are a few helpful tips that will hopefully help you squeeze in some shut eye for yourself and leave your skin feeling better!

  1. Stick to a schedule!

It can be difficult to sleep early when you have unfinished projects on your plate. However, you should still try to sleep at around the same time every night, give or take 30 minutes. Doing this will ensure that you are getting enough rest every day and keep your body in balance! When we suddenly decide to pull an all-nighter to rush through our work, we usually have to pay the price with fatigue and a disrupted sleep schedule. Making drastic changes to your bed time can therefore affect when you can fall asleep the next time, so it’s important to keep a consistent time to go to bed! You can always clear your backlog in the morning, after you’ve recharged. Though you may have to cut things out of your schedule when you’re busy, sleep should never be one of them.

  1. Eliminate DisruptionsWant to go to sleep after a long day of work, but find yourself tossing and turning in bed? To give yourself a better sleep environment, do remove all the electronic devices in your room (e.g. your laptop and handphone). It is encouraged that you stop using electronic devices half an hour before you sleep, because the light from our computer and handphone screens can keep us awake and make it harder to fall asleep. Spend the time preparing your outfit for the next day, or packing your bag so that you don’t have to rush yourself to get ready in the morning!
  1. Sleep in Complete DarknessThis is important because any form of light can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your brain’s production of melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain. One of its purposes is to stimulate sleepiness, lower the body’s temperature and control the sleep cycle. These signals are important in letting you get healthy and regular sleep.

Secondly, there’s serotonin which is a neurotransmitter located in the central nervous system, platelets, stomach and intestine of the body. It has a calming effect on the body and will regulate your sleep!

When night falls and it gets closer to your usual bedtime, the levels of serotonin in the body increase, sending signals to the brain to produce melatonin. These two features combine to kick start the body’s natural sleep cycle. To help yourself fall into a natural sleep cycle, make sure that your room is as dark as possible!

If you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, make it a habit to keep the lights off! If you don’t, your body will immediately cease all production of melatonin for the rest of the night, which can affect your sleep.

  2. Have a Nightly Routine You Enjoy!Reward yourself after a long and tiring day with a nightly routine that you enjoy. Brew yourself a cup of warm tea (though some people may find that tea can keep them awake!), or use aromatherapy to calm your senses. Or else, pamper your skin! Use a calming and therapeutic overnight face mask, like Dermagold’s Hydra Recovery Gel, to moisturize your skin and leave it glowing the next day!

In this article, Ms YY Low sheds insight on how stress affects our skin’s condition. Read on to get a crucial understanding of why improving your skin also means you need to improve on the stressful conditions you may be facing in your life.

Stress is a body’s method of reacting to a challenge. In a stressful event, the body’s way to respond to stress is by the fight-or-flight response. Because our bodies cannot keep this state for long periods of time, our body systems will work to return our physiological conditions back to normal.

We respond to stressors by exhibiting physiological or biological stress. Examples of stressors include particular environmental conditions, or a stimulus like examination or conflicts.

Stress typically denotes a negative condition (or sometimes a positive condition) that can have an impact on a person’s mental and physical well-being. Here are 5 insights into the relationship between stress and acne.

  1. When we are stressed, our immune system is weakened. Similarly, our ability to fight infection in the skin is diminished under stress.
  2. We have many nerve endings on our skin and when we are stressed, they produce neuropeptides. These are basically stress-induced chemicals that create inflammation in the skin. This can result in redness or bumpiness of the skin. Some people may even experiences changes in sensations such as: itching, burning, tingling, pain, and sensitivity. Neuropeptides are absolutely, intimately related to stress.
  3. Sometimes, stress and acne can interact in a harmful cycle. When some people are anxious or upset, they’re more likely to pick at their blemishes. While many people squeeze a pimple occasionally, there are extreme cases in which a person will pick at his/her blemishes compulsively because they are worried and embarrassed about their skin, and they cannot make themselves stop. This condition is called acne excoriee.
  4. Conversely, acne can also cause stress. Acne is more than just skin deep; for many people, it takes a high emotional toll. Loss of self-confidence, changes in self-esteem, depression and anxiety are all common side effects of dealing with acne. Even mild breakouts can negatively impact how one feel about themselves. For some, they experience the negative emotional effects of acne even after they have brought it under control. In healthy psychology, there is a term call “phantom limb pain.” People who have lost a hand, an arm, a leg, a foot, continue to feel these parts. They actually experience the sensation as if that limb still is a part of them!Likewise, people can experience “phantom acne”. They will look in the mirror and even though objectively they can say “I don’t see any pimples,” they will experience the world as if they still have acne.
  5. What can be done? A person cannot really make acne disappear just by using stress reduction techniques. For many people, acne is a chronic problem that requires long-term treatment at multiple fronts. However, there is nothing to lose if one learns how to reduce negative effects of stress. The fact if it is that managing stress can help people feel better, feel happier, and take better care of themselves. Stress management remains significant solution as it may make people live longer and enjoy life more.

Two servings of fruit are undoubtedly a great way to add extra nutrition and make your diet healthier. Here are some fruits that have an extra benefit of keeping your skin radiant and healthy!

Berries – Strawberry, blueberries, blackberries and so on… They’re small and hence perfect for an afternoon snack when you’re feeling peckish. You’ll benefit from the antioxidants found in them! Not only do antioxidants protect your body from free radical damage (usually from pollutants in the air and radiation), but they boost your skin’s health. Firstly, they are able to boost your skin’s protection from external damage like sun damage. Next, by reducing free radical damage, antioxidants help in the healing process of the skin!

Oranges
Oranges are a no-brainer because they are characterised as a good source of Vitamin C, which as anti-oxidant and anti-aging effects with sufficient intake. Find out more about how Vitamin C can affect and improve our skin in our post here!

Dragonfruit
While some may find dragonfruit a little bland, you may want to eat some of the pinkish fruit after you know the following: they’re high in antioxidants, a source of Vitamin C, both of which are good for the skin. In addition to this, including dragonfruit as part of a healthy lifestyle can improve heart health because of the monosaturated fats they contain.

Avocado
Avocado face masks are a common product we can find on the market today. Why? Because avocados contain moisturizing properties that can help you build and retain moisture! This can help you if you’re looking to keep your skin healthy and firm. Adding on to that, avocados can also give your body a boost in antioxidants.

Above all, do remember that fruits are a great alternative to salty snacks like chips and artificially sweetened chocolates and candies. This is not to say that we should cut off all indulgence in our lives… it’s perfectly fine to give yourself a treat once in awhile! Balance out the food you’re feeding yourselves and adjust your lifestyle to bring out the best in you!

If you want to find out what other foods are good for your skin, check out our post on the healthier dishes you can try at your neighbourhood food court.

Between the fragile ages of fifteen to eighteen, my mother would tell me (in a reprimanding tone) “No one will like you if your face is like that!” and my father used to ask, teasingly, “Why are there so many pimples on your face?” as if I had control over my unpredictable breakouts.

It’s no surprise that many of us find ourselves demoralized when our skin is not as perfect as we want it to be, no matter what we do or how long we wait and hope and wish and pray that our hormones calm down and leave us in peace. Today we’re surrounded by constant reminders of what perfect skin looks like, whether it may be from adverts, TV, and even in real life by our peers who have matured gracefully into adulthood.

Still, as hard as at times, we have to remember that imperfect skin isn’t the end! Dermagold believes in inspiring others to dare to bare their skin despite their imperfections. Here’s why:

  • It Will Get Better

Your skin is more likely to balance out from your mid-twenties onwards when your hormones have stabilized. In fact, there are many things you can do to improve upon your imperfections little by little. You can eat healthier, sleep more, and use certain products designed to treat and calm your skin. What is important is to never lose hope and to remember that with patience, time, and effort, you will get better!

  • Your Insecurities are not Your Flaws

Though it may be difficult to love yourself on days where you don’t look your best, never confuse your insecurities for your flaws. Our insecurities are inward and personal, but our flaws are not. Indeed, our insecurities are not the things that make us less likeable or less attractive compared to others. They are what we think make us less perfect than others. Everyone has their share of insecurities, and we all should work towards overcoming them, appreciating our strengths and recognising our real flaws. For example, oily skin may be a source of insecurity, but being irresponsible and negligent are flaws. Someone is more likely to recognise and mark you for your flaws instead of your insecurities.

So remind yourself this the next time you feel your self-esteem running low! The only thing our insecurities and flaws have in common is that they are both aspects of ourselves that we should work on in order to better ourselves.

  • Passion and Effort Can’t Be Bought

Not everyone has the privilege to afford make-up to hide their acne scars or skincare treatments to reduce the spots and pimples on their face. But, when all this is said and done, the key things that will lead you to success can’t be bought with money. If you truly feel for something, and express this passion through the effort you put into your work, people will recognise you for the work you do and not for the way you look.

Do not forget this the next time you feel that you’re losing out because your skin is not as flawless as someone else’s. As much as we may not be able to control our skin’s condition, we can control the aspects of ourselves that are truly important.

  • It Will Get Better (Really!)

Be optimistic and be confident in yourself. You are much more beautiful (or handsome) than you will ever fathom because of this very simple fact: you will never be able to look at yourself from the same third person perspective that those who treasure you can. And remember this:

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” – Ronald Dahl

Does your diet really affect your complexion? Although not every single food type has undergone clinical trials or studies, findings progressively point towards the idea that food is a natural medicine for our bodies and contributes to the basic building blocks for our skin. In other words, the food you choose to take in could possibly be as vital as the skincare products you are using right now.

So, if you would like to try extra measures to give your skin a healthy boost the next time you have a meal at your neighbourhood foodcourt, consider these dishes!

  1. Sliced Fish Soup

Fish, especially the kind that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids is wonderful because of its anti-inflammatory properties, which in turn calms the skin. While white fish has less of this than salmon, it’s still a good alternative to eat. Ask for more vegetables, green veggies especially, when you order this dish and your skin will thank you for the double boost of nutrients!

  1. Yong Tau Foo and Mixed Vegetable Rice

One of the joys of eating at these two stalls is the power of choice you have. Exercise this power wisely and add more veggies on your plate because they contain phyto-estrogens, which can help in stabilizing our hormones. Greens like spinach are also rich in antioxidants that help in reducing the damage our skin takes from free radicals.

Tofu, a form of soy protein that us Asians should be familiar with, is also commonly available at these stalls, and even with Nasi Padang. It’s a great side to add to your meal because it is a protein that doubles as a fantastic skin replenisher. Read more about the health benefits of tofu here.

  1. Tomato Dishes

The tomato is a potent ingredient to add to your meals because it contains beta-carotenoids, which is the same stuff you can find in pumpkin! A second important nutrient you can get from eating tomatoes is lycopene. Lycopene is an excellent skin protector and booster and tomatoes can usually be found in soups, claypot dishes, or the yong tau foo stall, so there’s no reason not to add some on your plate!

  1. Chinese Soups / Double boiled soups

If you prefer not to eat fish at all, a secondary option could be the soup stall. With choices ranging from bittergourd, to lotus root, and ABC soup, these broths contain components that can help to keep skin healthy. Lotus root in particular is high with Vitamin C. This gives a boost to collagen, the compound that strengthens our skin.

Pumpkin rice (jin gua fan) is an option that would be a great complement to these soups! Pumpkin contains beta-carotene, which gives your skin all the good-stuff it needs, improving your glow and radiance while offering anti-aging benefits on the side.

  1. Other Fish Dishes

If you’re not a soup person, there are other stalls where you can find fish that is rich in skin-friendly omega 3 fatty acids. The first would be the grilled saba/mackerel from Korean food stalls, or alternatively, the Japanese food stalls which serve teriyaki salmon sets.

  1. BONUS: Which drinks are skin friendly?

Water is the superior choice above all, especially compared to carbonated drinks or flavoured sugary drinks. This is because introducing too much sugar into our systems can lead to inflammations, which results in skin aeing. This is why we should keep our skin adequately hydrated by drinking plain water, as constant hydration is one of the easiest ways to keep our skin looking and feeling healthy.

If you prefer to have some taste in our drink during meal times, fruit juice is a great secondary choice. Not only do fruits have high water content, but ingredients like apples, oranges or even carrots (which also provide beta-carotene) are healthy choices when we are being mindful of our complexions.

To summarize – eat more fish, fruits, and vegetables whenever you can, and your skin will be thanking you for these small but meaningful choices. Start with minor changes to your daily habits and be positive about the effects they could have on your skin! #miraclesdohappen

On the lookout for a new scrub to try in your daily beauty ritual? Dermagold’s Purifying Scrub will be a great addition with its ability to provide you with TRIPLE the amount of cleansing and promote rejuvenation of sun-damaged skin. Join us as we interrogate this award-winning product to find out what makes it so smart and innovative!

WHAT DOES THE SCRUB DO?

The scrub is formulated with a triple cleansing and polishing action –

  1. Polishes your skin with crystalline salts and Vitamin C
  2. Dissolves sebum and blackheads with plant oils
  3. Fruit acids in Dermagold’s Brightening Revitalizer activate with the scrub, further enhancing the entire process.

After using the scrub, you will feel refreshed as all that is left on your face will be a smooth and natural protective layer that will make your skin glow! Exfoliating regularly will also remove sun-damaged skin and lighten the skin.

HOW DOES IT DO THIS?

The scrub contains tiny particles of (a) crystalline salts and (b) grainy ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) found in natural plant oils such as seabuckthornjojoba oil and shea butter, which are key to polishing the skin’s surface.

Secondly, the plant oils enhance skin penetration. Being absorbed seamlessly into the skin’s pores to dissolve the excessive sebum (and blackheads), these natural oils allow for a much deeper pore cleansing than what you would usually get.

Lastly, the scrub is smart because it activates in response to the Dermagold Brightening Revitalizer (BR)! The fruit acids in the BR work with the plant oils in the scrub, dissolving the ‘bonds’ between the dead skin cells on your face to speed up skin renewal, leaving your skin looking younger, smoother, and fairer.

Simply use the scrub once or twice a week (depending on your skin’s condition) to let it work miracles on your skin (:

WHICH SKIN TYPE IS THIS BEST SUITED FOR?

Every single one! Another reason why the scrub is smart is because it has been adapted to suit all skin types! It is a form of ‘rinse off’ treatment, ensuring that no real overload is left behind on the skin once you have cleansed your face.

  • Those with sensitive skin can rest their minds at ease because the Purifying Scrub is considerate of this and is gentle on your skin.
  • Those with acne marks and scars will notice their skin lightening after consistent usage.

Therefore, the scrub is best suited for those who just want to achieve clearer, brighter, and fairer skin!

This award-winning product rings true to its name as it not only scrubs, but purifies your skin, making it a welcome introduction to anyone’s personal facial care regime. For more info on how to purchase the Purifying Scrub, check out Dermagold’s website here.

If you’ve read our article on why it’s a must to wear sunblock in Singapore (check it out here), but find it inconvenient to incorporate it into your day, or are not sure when to apply sunblock, here are some simple practices to ensure that you give your skin the protection that it needs.

1. Apply it right at the end of your skincare routine

You don’t have to apply your sunblock just before you go out. Instead of seeing sunblock as an additional part of your usual routine, you should see it as an essential part of your daily beauty ritual instead. Group it together with the skincare products you are already using and simply apply some sunblock on after you’re done moisturizing your face in the morning – before it can slip your mind.

2. Bring some with you wherever you go

Not all sunblock comes in big, clunky bottles! Keep a small tube of sunblock in your bag with you wherever you go so you can have it ready whenever you’re going to spend a while under the sun. In fact, applying sunblock simply once a day won’t be able to give you sufficient sun protection. It is recommended to apply sunblock once every 3 hours to ensure that your skin is fortified from harmful UV rays.

3. Choose a product you like to use

The simplest way to ensure you put on sunblock is to use a product that you are drawn to and one that you believe in. This may be hard to come by in Singapore, where sunblocks are frequently thick and may result in clogged pores in our hot and humid climate.

This is why Dermagold’s sunblocks are all light-textured! This is to meet the needs of Singaporeans who want a fuss-free and effective sunblock that can get them through the day with ease. This is because these line of sunblocks are packed with active ingredients to protect your skin while at the same time remain lightweight to ensure a quick and hassle-free absorption by the skin. Check out Dermagold’s variety of sunblocks and find the one that suits your skin and lifestyle best.
